Background

Rayna Drakson grew up as a normal, happy girl on her family’s farm in the hinterland of New Oldtown on the backwater planet Aldivy, and by now she probably would have fallen in love with a farmboy and started to live a family life. But fate had different plans for her.

One day, when Rayna was 17 years old, a swoop gang ran over their farm. They were 8 brutes of different species who carried another comrade that was severly wounded. It started out as a simple request for a medpack to stop the bleeding, but the farmers only had traditional linen bandages and so the wounded man was brought into the house where Rayna’s mother tried her best to tend to his wounds. Rayna had been sent to her room beforehand, but curious as she was she snook out and looked down into the main room. The men noticed her and began whistling and demanded that she accompany them. When Rayna’s father protested one of the gangers broke his nose with a swift punch and the tone got a little rough. The final escalation came when Rayna’s younger brother Jamie secretly snooped around the panniers of the swoop bikes and discovered several lockboxes with the emblem of New Oldtown Bank which had been robbed mere hours ago by 9 masked bandits.

One of the gangers caught the boy, shot him instantly and dragged the body into the living room where he dropped it in front of the family. At the same time the wounded bandit started his death rattle and succumbed to his wounds, which made one of his comrades shoot Rayna’s mom as well. Her dad tried to get up, but he was overwhelmed and his limbs broken so he could only watch helplessly as the bandits tore Rayna’s clothes off and gang-raped her. The girl tried to resist, but that made them use even more force, so they punched and kicked her and cut her with knives. Rayna’s grandparents and some farmhands heard the noise and came over to check if everything was alright, but they were also shot where they stood, while the bandits continued to abuse the girl. At some point they stopped, stabbed her a few times and spilled fire accelerant which they ignited with a blaster shot. A few minutes they stood and watched the house catch fire, then they got on their bikes and sped away.

Rayna came to again when her body caught on fire, since some accelerant had also been spilled over her, and she barely could extinguish the flames by rolling over them. Screaming and crying she narrowly dragged herself out of the burning house before it collapsed, stumbled over the cattle watering tank and fell in. She was found like that a short time later, when veteran mercenary Brent Sparks came along in his wheel-tank, together with the Sheriff of New Oldtown and a few armed men in pursuit of the bankrobbers. They had seen the smoke from the distance and as fast as they could they brought the gravely wounded girl to the New Oldtown hospital. But Bacta was rare and expensive, so her wounds were treated conventionally. For several weeks it was uncertain if she would ever recover, and due to the pain she was constantly kept under pain suppressors.

After a month of fruitless investigation Brent Sparks returned to check on the girl. Rayna had one of her conscious moments and recognized her savior. She made him promise to train her as soon as she recovered so she would be able to take revenge on her tormentors. Reluctantly, Brent agreed, knowing that this might be the only thing that had kept her alive so far. From this day on, her condition improved rapidly, and a mere month later she was able to leave the hospital.

Although the fire had burnt almost half of her beautiful face, and numerous scars covered almost her entire body, this only seemed to strengthen her resolve and she strived to become better and stronger. Brent kept his promise and trained her, put her through tough school and pushed Rayna to her limits, since both knew that this was the only way she would survive long enough to put those crooks to justice. Aside from rigorous physical fitness and reflex training Brent taught her everything he knew about weapons and dirty streetfighting techniques. She also learned how to find her way through the dark alleys of a city and how to get information from uncooperative suspects.

After 3 years of hard training Rayn Dark, as she now called herself, felt ready to embark on her own mission to bring the bandits to justice. Since she had nothing to pay Brent back for his training she struck a deal: Whenever he would need her for a mission she would aid him for free.

Then Rayn began her own investigations for the criminals and by sheer accident stumbled across one of them in a seedy spacer’s bar. She could barely restrain herself from instantly blasting him to oblivion, but she knew that she needed his help to find the others. So she kept an eye on him for several days until he eventually found out he was being followed and set her up on a rooftop. After a wild fight that warranted a few new knife wounds Rayn was able to subdue the crook and get some information about the others out of him. While rummaging through his belongings Rayn was distracted for a moment which the gangster used for an attempt at escaping. Out of a reflex she shot him with her blaster so he broke through a barrier and fell to his death 20 levels below.

Fortunately, Rayn had already searched him and taken most of his stuff, including all his money, so she was now able to afford a few necessities for her next steps. She bought weapons and a decent body armor that would pay off in her new job. She also paid for an official bounty hunting license, so she would be able to legally prosecute the perpetrators. The last thing was personal: She had 8 piercings done in her right ear, that was still intact, and for each of the gangsters that had killed her family brought to justice she added a red pearl into one of the rings. That way she could keep track of her objective.

4 years and 4 more red pearls have passed and Rayn begins to realize that soon she will have to find a new source of motivation.

Rayn prefers contracts from women that have experienced bad treatment from men who she gladly puts to justice. Aside from that she tries to only accept bounties on criminals, not innocents who accidentally stepped on the wrong toes.

Physical Description

When hunting criminals or generally “on duty” Rayn always wears her black and red body armor and her helmet, both of which show signs of intense use. Under her armor she wears a robust black body glove. Black military pants cover her legs, while her boots are armored on the front up to her knees as well. Her helmet has a fixed, reflective visor with a flash-filter that protects her from the effects of flashbang grenades and the like, but does not have a breathing filter or oxygen supply. Her main armament are a pair of heavy blaster pistols which she carries in quickdraw-holsters on her thighs. A vibro-knife is hidden behind the armor of her right boot and some stun-grenades are tied to her belt. She also acquired a telescopic shortstaff that she carries in a belt-pouch.

Whenever Rayn takes off her helmet, which she usually only does to eat, drink and intimidate suspects, the scarred left half of her face can be seen, where the fire had taken its toll. She has grey eyes and her left eyelid has a bit of scar tissue that make it look like the eye might be impaired which it is not. Most of the upper cartilage of her left ear is missing and deranged, while her right ear is intact and features 8 helix piercings, 5 of which include a red pearl. Her dark brown hair is cut quite short and practical with one white strand standing out at the point where the scar tissue of her face meets her hair.

Very rarely Rayn can be seen wearing casual clothes, let alone a bikini which would show that her entire body is scarred from fire, cuts, stabs and blasters.

When going out with friends in a fairly safe environment Rayn usually wears long, dark pants, a pair of black shoes without ornaments and a tight-fitting sweatshirt or similar top with long sleeves that shows as little skin as possible. Besides her helix piercings she might wear a pair of small hoops with a wave-pattern and a fitting ring on her middle finger. She never uses make-up, but might wear a hat or hood to hide the scarred half of her face.
